• Two-Creekan-age forest

Discovery of this buried wood location was a bit of a surprise and demonstrates the value of the saying “In the right place at the right time”. There was only a two-day exposure of the Two Creekan-age wood at a detention pond excavation in the vicinity of AmeriHost Inn on West Mason Road outside of Green Bay. This hotel was subsequently sold to another franchise. During check-in at the hotel we noticed a sharp boundary between glacial blue and brown clays at the excavation site. A visit to the excavation a few hours later confirmed our guess on the likelihood of finding Two Creekan wood (see Photo). With help of a project manager we collected 31 logs from this wood exposure. This collection resulted in developing a 293-year tree-ring width chronology of Two Creekan spruce at the Duck Creek basin.

Site view in the present day. The wood-filled deposits are located on the bottom of pond.
Site during excavation. The wood was found at the boundary between blue-gray and brown silt.
